The North St. Paul-Maplewood Oakdale School District boasts three candidates for the 2018 Minnesota Teacher of the Year award.

Education Minnesota, the state’s teacher’s union, presents the award, now in its 54th year, and announced the candidates Jan. 18.

Candidates for the award include pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and Adult Basic Education teachers from public and private schools, and this year’s competition has the third most candidates — 167 — in the award’s half-century history.

The three District 622 candidates are Peg Sorenson, who is a music and choir teacher at North High School, Pamela Ledermann, a science teacher at North High School and Shaylee McComb, a music teacher at Weaver Elementary School.

To be eligible for the award, a teacher must have a bachelor’s degree, a Minnesota teaching license, completed at least three years of teaching and have the intention to continue teaching.

Over the coming weeks, a 25-member panel of community leaders will select semifinalists and finalists, with the 2018 Minnesota Teacher of the Year being announced May 6.
