Precinct party caucuses are a week away

Precinct party caucuses are Tuesday, Feb. 6, at various locations beginning at 7 p.m. Plan to arrive roughly half an hour early in order to get set.

The caucuses are the place to be “if you want to get into the political arena or you’re interested in running” for office, said Thomas Jensen, treasurer and caucus coordinator for House District 66A Republicans.

Following record-setting caucus attendance in 2016 — the presidential election that year was the big draw — Jensen said crowds are expected to be a bit smaller this time around for the midterm elections, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from going.

“Even if it’s an off-year, show up anyway,” Jensen said.

The main draw for this year, Jensen said, should be the gubernatorial straw poll, where caucus attendees can vote on their candidate preferences for governor.

Gov. Mark Dayton, after two terms in office, is not seeking reelection, making this year’s election for the state’s top post the first open race for governor since 2010.

Caucus attendees can also learn about candidates, endorse candidates, elect precinct leadership and be involved in setting the party platform.

To participate, you must be eligible to vote in the November 2018 general election and live in the precinct. You also must generally agree with the principles of the political party hosting the caucus.

Caucus locations, by party, are below. Note that certain House Districts within the same Senate District may meet at different locations.
