Nationally acclaimed author visits Visitation School

Submitted photo • Local students like Annie Polome of Mendota Heights got the chance to meet Sharon Draper, a nationally acclaimed writer, when she visited Visitation School on Jan. 4.

On Jan. 4, nationally acclaimed writer Sharon Draper spoke with students at Visitation School. Draper, who is a New York Times bestselling author and National Teacher of the Year recipient, talked about her many books, including “Copper Sun” and “Out of My Mind.” This visit was coordinated by Visitation Upper School teacher Nicole Sutton, whose freshmen students read Draper’s novel “Copper Sun”, which chronicles the harrowing life of Amari, a fifteen-year-old girl stolen from her African tribe and sold into slavery in the early colonial days of America.

Besides talking with students, Draper conducted a writer’s workshop in the middle school and met with fifth-graders who are currently reading “Out of My Mind.”
