Mustang’s girls swimming season showcases their true horsepower

Some 69 members strong, the Mounds View High School girls swim and dive team concluded its regular season by defeating its last four opponents and finishing seventh at the true team state meet, ahead of rival East Ridge. 

Mounds View finished with a dual meet record of 6-2 after the Mustangs bested conference rivals Roseville, White Bear Lake, Park of Cottage Grove and Woodbury in the four most recent dual meets. 

The junior varsity squad wrapped up the season as a strong second in the Suburban East Conference, behind the Stillwater Ponies, who the Mustangs JV squad last beat at the 2014 JV conference finals.

The Mounds View varsity squad came together to finish second at the section finals Nov. 11, behind Stillwater. 

The JV top finishers by event include: Ella Boyles, Sylvia Elias, Sydney Pham and Sara Wilkowske, who finished in third place for the 200-yard medley relay. Lauren Denning took second place in the 200-yard freestyle, Sienna Wood finished eleventh in the 200-yard individual medley, and Wilkowske was third in the 50-yard freestyle, just 0.33 seconds behind Cretin-Derham Hall’s first-place finisher. 

In the 100-yard butterfly, Madeline Blasingame came in fifth for Mounds View, Sydney Pham’s time earned her seventh overall in the 100-yard freestyle, Denning was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, Wood came in sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, and in the 100-yard breaststroke, Elias finished in fifth place. 

The top JV 200-yard freestyle relay finishers include Mackenzie Groth, Kamela Tran, Pham, and Bridget Bohan in third, while Groth, Daisy Bai, Tran, and Bohan earned thirty points for Mounds View behind Stillwater, Cretin-Derham Hall and East Ridge in the 400-yard freestyle relay. 

Sila Yurttas and Bailey Powell finished in third and fourth diving for Mounds View in the JV conference finals meet.

 

Varsity

Notable Mounds View varsity squad top-eight finishers at the Section 4AA finals, by event include: Alli Misialek, Chella LaMere, Serena Chan and Kaja Holtz, who came in second place in the 200-yard medley relay; Zoe Rylander, LaMere, Holtz and Hannah Aitkin earning second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay just 0.57 of a second behind Stillwater; and the team of Rylander, Annie Moen, Misialek and Aitkin, who won second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. 

Aitkin finished third in the 200-yard freestyle and Megan West took sixth. Aitkin also took second in the 500-yard freestyle and will advance to state with her position in that event. 

Serena Chan finished seventh overall in the 200-yard individual medley with Mary Vranyes in eighth. Rylander placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and Moen, Holtz and LaMere finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Rylander also took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle for Mounds View behind Stillwater and Roseville, whose first-place swimmer, Pyper Doo, broke the previous section meet record. Kaja Holtz touched sixth for Mounds View in the event. 

Alli Misialek got to the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly and will advance to state, her time being a new Mounds View school record for the event. 

Chan earned another top spot in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing eighth. Misialek also clinched first in the 100-yard backstroke, taking that event to state, and Nora Waffensmith and West took sixth and seventh. LaMere was fifth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Vranyes in seventh and Eleanor Lynch in eighth, rounding out the podium. Mounds View divers Kira McCallum and Shelby Olson earned points for the team, finishing tenth and fourteenth. 

Mounds View swimmers advancing to the state girls swimming and diving meet include team captains Aitkin and LaMere, Holtz, Misialek and Rylander. The state meet was held Nov. 16-18 at the University of Minnesota Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, after the deadline for this edition of the paper.
