As leaves fall, DARTS volunteers unite

DARTS, a community-based nonprofit serving seniors and their families in and around Dakota County, is recruiting volunteers and older homeowners for its Fall Clean Up that will be completed throughout October and early November.

Homeowners can sign up to be paired with volunteer groups who will rake leaves and do other light yardwork before the winter snows hit. The time and date is agreed upon by both the volunteers and the homeowner, with the cleaning taking anywhere from one to three hours. Volunteer teams from 3M, Avionte, Thompson Reuters, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Rotary Clubs and Girl Scout Troops are some of the many teams that have participated in the past.

According to an AARP study, 90 percent of adults age 65 and older would prefer to live at home, or what is commonly known as “age in place.” Being an older adult homeowner can be tough when health challenges increase the difficulty of outside seasonal work.

The DARTS program is one of several throughout the Metro area who pair homeowners with willing volunteer groups.

To sign up for Fall Clean Up, please email Jennifer Myers at or call 651-234-2254. Fall Clean Up dates vary based upon when leaves drop.
