Janet Lorenzo, of Inver Grove Heights, has been named a 2017 Minnesota Humanities Center Veterans’ Voices Award recipient. Lorenzo joined the Navy at 18, and as a boatswain mate aboard a destroyer, went to Sri Lanka to relieve victims of a tsunami. Now, as administrative assistant in the Veterans Services office at Inver Hills Community College, she helps veterans who are nearly homeless, drives veterans to medical appointments and raises money to help students in the Veterans Lounge stay nourished while attending classes. Lorenzo is also the vice president of the VALOR Club, which supports civic engagement for vets through a network of colleges and universities, and chair of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon in her area.

Awards were presented at the Veterans’ Voices Award Ceremony Sept. 11 at the University of St. Thomas Anderson Student Center in St. Paul.
