LETTER: ‘21st Century’ guidelines need to be top priority

To the editor,

The President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and 21st Century Implementation Guide should be given top priority by the mayor and city council of Inver Grove Heights as they search for a new police chief with Springsted Waters’ recommended candidates.

Specific questions in this cutting-edge resource address whether we as stakeholders are currently moving from recommendation to action, and how and where we can act to improve. For example, have our leaders called on the Peace Officers Standards Training Commission to implement all levels of training? Our police force and community deserve best-practice training. If they aren’t receiving it, why not?

Local government, law enforcement and the community all have a stake in the police chief’s selection, and the Implementation Guide is a best-practice resource that fills that need. We need look no further. It should be followed by all stakeholders.
