Several South-West school board seats up for election

There are six school board seats up for election this year in the South-West coverage area. 

Candidate filing for the seats opens on Tuesday, Aug. 1 and closes Tuesday, Aug. 15.

In Inver Grove Heights School District 199, three of seven seats on the board are open. Affidavits of candidacy are available during office hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the superintendent’s office at the district office, 2990 80th St. E. in Inver Grove Heights.

Three seats are up on the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan District 197 Board. Affidavits of candidacy can be filed in the superintendent’s office at the district office, 1897 Delaware Ave. in Mendota Heights. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 8 to 11:30 a.m., on Fridays, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 15.

Completed affidavits of candidacy must be filed at the respective district office no later than 5 p.m. on Aug. 15 along with a non-refundable $2 filing fee, or a petition with at least 500 signatures of eligible voters in place of the filing fee.

People who file for candidacy for school boards have until 5 p.m. on Aug. 17 to request that their name be removed from the ballot. After that time the names of all remaining candidates will be included on the ballot.

Candidates for school board must be an eligible voter in the state of Minnesota, must not have filed for the same or any other office in the upcoming general election, must be 21 years of age or more upon assuming office, must have been a resident of the school district for which the candidate seeks election for 30 days before the general election, and must not be a registered sex offender.

Election day is Nov. 7.
