Mounds View tumbles in section semis
There’s not much girls hockey playoff history between Mounds View High School and White Bear Lake but they’re making up for it quickly. The Mustangs and Bears squared off in the Section 4AA semifinals for the second consecutive season and they are now 1-1 in those two meetings.
White Bear Lake evened the score by beating Mounds View 2-1 in overtime on Feb. 14 at Aldrich Arena.
Mounds View won last year’s playoff match-up against White Bear Lake 2-0 and then lost to Hill-Murray in the section final.
White Bear Lake opened the scoring in this year’s meeting just 2:22 into the game. Mounds View answered nine minutes later on Rachel Anderson’s power-play goal that was assisted by Annika Brodt and Kaiya Quam.
That would be it for the scoring until overtime. Mounds View outshot the Bears 22-12 in the second and third periods but couldn’t get anything past White Bear Lake netminder Calla Frank.
In the overtime, White Bear’s Sydney Shearen got free in the Mounds View zone and tucked a shot inside the far post to beat Mustangs’ goalie Teagen Johnson for the game-winner.
Johnson finished with 20 saves on 22 shots faced while Frank stopped 33 of Mounds View’s 34 shots.
Mounds View gained the semifinals by rolling past Woodbury 5-0 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 11.
The win sent the Bears to the section final, where they lost 4-1 to Hill-Murray.
Hill-Murray advances to this week’s state tournament and is the No. 3 seed. The Pioneers open the tournament on Feb. 23 against unseeded Eastview.
