Thirds all around for Roseville at SEC Nordic meet

The Roseville Area High School Nordic ski racing teams both brought home third-place finishes at the Suburban East Conference championships last week.

Competing at Mississippi National Golf Links in Red Wing on Feb. 1, Roseville’s boys team amassed 415 points while the girls scored 428 points.

Stillwater took home both team championships by placing its top five competitors in the top 10 in the boys’ competition and the top 11 for the girls. The top five finishers for each team earn points toward the team total.

Stillwater won the boys title with 478 points while runner-up Forest Lake had 454. In the girls  standings, the Ponies won with 479 points and Forest Lake was second with 457.

Sophomore Dan Lee led Roseville in the boys competition by finishing fourth overall. His total time, which is figured by adding his times in the classic and skate races, was 27 minutes, 58 seconds. He finished third in both races.

Competitors who finish in the top 22 earn all-conference honors and joining Lee on that list were teammates Carlos O’Gorman and Joey Quick. O’Gorman, a senior, finished 18th overall with a time of 30 minutes, 36 seconds and Quick, a sophomore, was 22nd with a time of 31 minutes, 14 seconds.

The next 11 finishers are named all-conference honorable mention and the Raiders in that group were eighth grader Joe Lee (27th), freshman Nick Greenlund (30th) and senior Wyatt Furois (33rd). Also competing at the conference meet for Roseville were freshman Aran Koob, sophomore Jack Kachel, junior Austin Atz and sophomore Max Miller.

On the girls’ side, junior Sam Kurkowski set the pace with a sixth-place finish in a time of 32 minutes, five seconds. Kurkowski finished fourth in the skate race and eighth in the classic.

Kurkowski was one of four Raiders to finish high enough in the individual standings to earn all-conference accolades. She was joined by sophomore Carly Dahms (13th), senior Naomi Boehm (18th) and freshman Frances Ryan (22nd).

Honorable mention all-conference nods went to senior Olivia DiGiorno (25th) and junior Isabel Bibeau (33rd). The rest of Roseville’s conference-meet contingent included junior Ashley Nelson, senior Amelia Bowser, sophomore Winter AnderJohn and senior Carmen Swanson.

Next up for the Raiders is the Section 4 state-qualifying meet on Feb. 9 at Hyland Park in Bloomington. Those who finish well enough advance to the state meet on Feb. 16 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
