Raiders boys hockey jump right into conference play

With just one non-conference game under its belt, the Roseville Area High School boys hockey team begins its slate of Suburban East Conference games this week.

“There are no weak teams in the SEC,” RAHS head coach Ryan Adams said. “We look forward to the challenge of playing tough opponents every night.”

It probably won’t get much tougher than Roseville’s opponent on Dec. 8. The Raiders visit No. 2 ranked Stillwater, which lost just once in the regular season last year and was a state semifinalist.

Roseville follows up the Stillwater tilt with a home game against rival White Bear Lake on Dec. 10.

Roseville opened the season on Nov. 29 with a 5-2 victory at Totino-Grace. Junior Blake Haselberger got his season off to a rousing start by recording a hat trick. He scored one goal and had four points all of last season.

Also recording a multi-point game against Totino-Grace was sophomore Adam King, who scored the Raiders’ other two goals. King is one of five sophomores on the roster.

Adams isn’t counting on hat tricks each time out and believes the keys to success for this squad this season are goaltending and defensive play by all skaters, not just the defensemen.

Manning the crease for the Raiders this season is senior Marshall Murphy, who was named all-conference honorable mention last season. Murphy played about 96 percent of the varsity minutes a year ago, finished with a goals-against average of 3.43 and had a save percentage just shy of .900.

“We will be focused on maximizing our potential,” said Adams, who is in his fourth season as Roseville head coach. “We want the guys to give everything they can for their teammates. If we do our best all year long and play the game with respect for our opponents, that will be a successful year.”
