Top hockey scorers back to lead Titans

With two of its three top scorers back for another season, the Tartan High School boys hockey team looks to be strong up front. A high-powered offense might be called on to win some games early, while the Titans figure out what they have on the blue line and in goal.

Tartan graduated the only two goalies who played on last year s team, and the defensive corps is also thin on experience.

“Returner Dalton Reither [a senior] will anchor the blue line with players who have limited varsity experience,” said Tartan co-head coach Steve Romanchuk, who shares the head-coaching duties with Ray Sierakowski. “We lost two outstanding goaltenders from last year. We will rely on younger, inexperienced players off the JV. This position is wide open.”

What is for sure is who will be expected to set the tone offensively. Seniors Sam Lindahl and CJ Acker are back after combining for 56 points last season. Lindahl, who is also a scoring whiz on the lacrosse field, tied for the team lead in scoring last season with 30 points—12 goals, 18 assists. Acker was third on the team with 26 points—12 goals, 14 assists.

Other experienced returners include seniors Joey Schommer and Bobby Veitch and junior Nick Bowlin, all of whom appeared in at least 20 games a year ago. Senior Charlie Tabaka also returns after playing in 10 games.

“Good attitudes and desire will hopefully be a good recipe to experience a successful season,” Romanchuk said.

Tartan went 15-10-1 last season. Following a 4-5-1 start to the campaign, the Titans got on a roll and went 11-3-1 after Jan. 1.

Tartan put up some impressive goal totals in its victories. The Titans scored six or more goals in a game six times.

The Titans played two games prior to Thanksgiving last season, but are waiting until after Turkey Day to lace ‘em up for the first time this year. Tartan opens the season on Nov. 26 with a 3 p.m. home game against Rochester Lourdes.

The Titans are back in action next week with a pair of games, starting with a visit from Henry Sibley High School on Dec. 1. They follow that up with a trip to Forest Lake on Dec. 3.
