North,Tartan combined team set for year two of its co-op

In order to preserve the opportunity for girls to play high school hockey in District 622, the teams at North High and Tartan formed a cooperative team that began play last season. North/Tartan won 15 games last year and is set for year two of the co-op.

North/Tartan returns 10 players from a year ago and with those kind of numbers, co-head coaches Nick Fuerst and Allie Thunstrom are looking to be competitive in the Metro East Conference.

The only conference team North/Tartan lost to last season was Hill-Murray. The Pioneers are the defending Metro East champs and haven t lost a conference game since the 2012-13 season.

Returning to lead the forwards this season for North/Tartan are seniors Maddie Ciolkosz and Gabby Bjellos and sophomore Claire Meeder. Ciolkosz is the team s top returing scorer after registering 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points last season.

The defensive leaders are senior Cali Pearcy and junior Zoe Culshaw-Klein.

Newcomers to keep an eye on include freshman forward Lauren Henriksen and sophomore defenseman Josslen Thieschafer.

Junior Olivia Schultz appears to have inherited the goaltending job. North/Tartan s top two goalies from last season were both seniors.

North/Tartan opened the season with a pair of non-conference games last week. The season opener was Nov. 10 at Bloomington Ice Garden and North/Tartan came away with a 4-3 victory over Bloomington Jefferson.

Pearcy scored the game-winner with two minutes left in the third period off of assists from senior Jaden Young and Bjellos.

North/Tartan trailed 1-0 after the first period, but scored twice in the second to take the lead. Ciolkosz bagged North/Tartan s first goal of the season at 7:29 as junior Marissa Hawkins and Thieschafer provided the helpers. Meeder came up with the second goal with the assists going to Henriksen and Ciolkosz.

Burnsville knotted the score at 2-2 less than a minute into the third period, but Henriksen put North/Tartan back in front with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 9:29.

The Blaze tied it up 91 seconds later, but Pearcy had the answer.

Burnsville outshot North/Tartan 29-18, but Schultz was solid in making 26 saves. Burnsville netminder Riley Pester stopped 14 shots.

North/Tartan played at Bloomington Jefferson on Nov. 12, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

North/Tartan has a pair of games on the docket this week, starting on Nov. 16 with a trip to Roseville. The home opener is Nov. 18 against Woodbury at Polar Arena.

Other non-conference foes on the schedule this season include Hudson, Bloomington Jefferson again, Apple Valley, Irondale/St. Anthony, Faribault, River Falls, Grand Rapids and East Ridge. North/Tartan also plays three games in the Schwan Cup holiday tournament.

As for the Metro East Conference schedule, North/Tartan plays Henry Sibley and South St. Paul once each and Hastings, Mahtomedi, Simley and Hill-Murray twice each.
