Polars face Central in playoff opener

The North High School football team needs to have a short memory as it heads into the post-season this week. The regular season didn’t go well at all and the Polars especially need to forget about week eight as they prepare for the playoffs.

North suffered a 69-20 loss to Park-Cottage Grove on Oct. 19. The Wolfpack rolled up more than 500 yards of total offense as North surrendered 48 points before halftime.

The loss was North’s third in a row and the 69 points were the most the Polars have given up in a single game in more than 10 years.

The Polars played the Section 4AAAAA quarterfinal contest on Oct. 25 at St. Paul Central (4-4). North was the sixth seed in the section while Central was seeded third. The game was played after the deadline for this edition of the Review.

The Minutemen entered the post-season having lost two in a row. They closed out the regular season last week with a 21-14 loss to St. Paul Highland Park and also fell 43-21 to St. Croix Lutheran in week seven.

Central’s wins this season came against St. Paul Johnson, St. Anthony Village, Minneapolis Southwest and Minneapolis Washburn. None of those four teams has a winning record.

The North/Central winner moves on to face second-seeded SMB (St. Paul Academy/Minnehaha Academy/Blake) on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. The Wolfpack are undefeated and ranked No. 10 in the state in Class AAAAA
