Mounds View tennis through to section semifinals

The Mounds View High School girls tennis team rolled to a pair of easy victories in the first round of the section playoffs last week. The Mustangs began this week as one of four teams still in contention in Section 4AA.

Mounds View is the No. 2 seed in 4AA and beat 15th-seeded St. Paul Washington and seventh-seeded Irondale by identical 7-0 scores.

Joining Mounds View in the final four were top-seeded Mahtomedi, third-seeded Stillwater and fifth-seeded Centennial. Mounds View and Stillwater met in one semifinal on Monday while the other pitted defending section champion Mahtomedi against Centennial.

The Section 4AA team championship match is set for Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. The section champion advances to the state tournament, also at Baseline, on Oct. 25-26.

Irondale earned its quarterfinal match against Mounds View by beating 10th-seeded Spring Lake Park 4-3 in the first round.

St. Anthony Village was seeded 11th and faced sixth-seeded Totino-Grace in the first round. The Eagles won 5-2 and were eliminated in the next round by Stillwater.

Following the conclusion of the section team tournament, the section singles and doubles tournaments run Oct. 17-18 at Baseline. The qualifiers will play in the state tournament on Oct. 27-28.
