Mounds View wraps up conference girls tennis title

At the beginning of the season, the final Suburban East Conference match for the Mounds View High School girls tennis team looked to be important. The Mustangs were scheduled to take on defending conference champion Woodbury on Sept. 29 and it looked like a strong possibility that the match would decide the SEC title.

That premonition turned out to be true. When Mounds View and the Royals met last Thursday, both teams were unbeaten in conference play, meaning the winner would indeed be the 2016 Suburban East Conference champ.

Mounds View clinched the title with a 5-2 victory.

With the SEC title secured, the Mustangs turn their attention to another championship this week. The Section 4AA team tournament starts on Oct. 4 and Mounds View is trying to return to the top of the heap after finishing runner-up to Mahtomedi last year.

The loss to Mahtomedi in the section final snapped Mounds View’s streak of trips to the state tournament at eight.

In the Class AA state rankings released on Oct. 3, Mahtomedi was fifth and Mounds View was sixth.

The two teams met in the Edina Invitational tournament on Sept. 24 and Mahtomedi came out ahead 4-3, which was also the score of the section final last season.
