Experienced core to lead North girls cross country

The North High School girls cross country team has 17 girls on the roster this fall and among them is a group of experienced runners hoping to improve on last season. The Polars finished seventh in the section meet and advanced one runner to the state meet.

“We do have a strong group that runs well together leading the team,” said North head coach Katy Fini.

Seniors Kara Star, Kate Conway and Paige Ericson are this season’s captains. Conway and Ericson are among North’s top runners along with juniors Aoife Zamacona and Ana Medrano. All are multiple-year letterwinners.

Newcomers who should see varsity time include freshman Kathryn Orme and eighth grader Amor Tuttle.

The Polars opened the season on Aug. 26 at the Central Open hosted by St. Paul Central at the University of St. Catherine. North finished eighth out of nine teams but had the lowest gap between its first and fifth runner.

Zamacona led North by finishing 41st with a time of 23:12. Ericson was 42nd, Kate Conway was 43rd, Tuttle was 45th and Medrano was 49th. Also racing in the varsity event were Orme and Anna Conway.
