Return to state among Mounds View girls tennis goals

The Mounds View High School girls tennis team saw its streak of eight consecutive trips to the state tournament come to a halt in 2015. The Mustangs return 11 letterwinners from last year’s team looking to restart a state streak.

Standing in Mounds View’s way is, most likely, Mahtomedi. The Zephyrs beat Mounds View 4-3 in the Section 4AA section final to prevent the Mustangs from making it nine straight state appearances.

“Mahtomedi is still the team to beat,” said Mounds View head coach Mike Cartwright.

Seven of the 11 returning letterwinners are seniors and that group includes No. 1 singles player Ali Kopiecki. Kopiecki has played in the last three Class AA state singles tournaments.

Madison Brandt and Madison Wang are also seniors who could figure into Mounds View’s singles lineup this season. Other returning seniors include Kalei Cartwright, Sabrina Tang, Emma Tsai and Amber Zhao.

Sophomore Taylor Trondson and freshman Merit Swenson are also singles players and freshman Paige Trondson is also a returning letterwinner.

“I’m really impressed with how everyone is playing and has improved from last year,” Cartwright said.

Another goal for the Mustangs this fall is to return to the top of the heap in the Suburban East Conference. Woodbury won the conference title in 2015 and Cartwright expects the Royals to be strong again this year. Mounds View and Woodbury face each other in the final match of conference schedule and the SEC championship will most likely be on the line in that match.

Mounds View has 82 girls out for tennis this season and while that number is down about seven from a year ago, it still presents the challenge providing court space for that many players. For practice last week, the Mustangs used the eight courts at Mounds View High School, six at the University of Northwestern, six at Bethel University, five at Chippewa Middle School and four at Kohler Meadows Park.

Mounds View opened the season on August 19 with a non-conference match at Spring Lake Park and came away with a 7-0 victory. The Mustangs also took on Irondale on Aug. 22, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

Mounds View ventures to Edina for a doubles tournament on Wednesday and heads back to Edina on Friday for a position tournament. Next week, the Mustangs host Edina in a dual match on Aug. 30 and open Suburban East Conference play on Sept. 1 with a trip to Forest Lake.

The rest of Mounds View’s schedule includes seven more conference matches, a non-conference dual against Blake in early October and three invitational tournaments. The Mustangs play in the Mayo Invite on Sept. 10, the Elk River tournament on Sept. 17 and the Edina Invitational on Sept. 24.
