New coach inherits inexperienced RAHS girls tennis team

Bruce Hashimoto enters his first season as the head coach of the Roseville Area High School girls tennis team with an inexperienced group of players. The Raiders graduated a large group of seniors off of the 2015 team.

“We did lose nine seniors, so we will be inexperienced,” said Hashimoto.

Despite the lack of varsity experience on the roster, Hashimoto has some skilled tennis players. Sophomore co-captain Hayley Helberg is in her third season on varsity and was the team MVP in 2015.

Senior Michelle Lo is also a co-captain.

Eighth grader Surena Vu is nationally ranked for her age group.

A newcomer to watch is Nicole Ridenour, a nationally-ranked seventh grader. Other newcomers include Rachel Caprella, Sophie Caprella, Anna Park, Ann Huynh, Toni Kringstad, Liv Haugen, MinWoo Kim and Summer Sedlacek.

“We are young and have some skilled players but lack experience,” said Hashimoto. “My hope is we will develop into a strong team as the season develops.”

Hashimoto’s coaching resume includes work at Roseville Area Middle School and with the B-squad. He also coached a club team at the University of Minnesota and has also been a private coach.

Roseville opened the season on Aug. 22 with a quadrangular tournament at Anoka. Results for that event were not available for this edition of the Review.

Also on the Raiders’ schedule this week is a tournament at Delano on Aug. 25 and a home quadrangular on Aug. 27. The Delano tournament includes Blaine, Brainerd, Cambridge-Isanti, Orono, Osakis and Princeton. Joining Roseville on Aug. 27 are Centennial, Mounds Park Academy and Simley.
