St. Anthony doubles team goes to state

St. Anthony Village High School’s Nicholas Kroening and Quinn Bellestri wrapped up the prep tennis season with an appearance in the state tournament last week. The duo went 0-2 in the Class A doubles tournament on June 9 at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.

Kroening, a junior, and Bellestri, a senior, opened the tournament with a match against Blake’s Joe Mairs, an eighth grader, and Owen Rickert, a junior. Mairs and Rickert beat Kroening and Bellestri 6-1, 6-0 and then won three more times to capture the Class A state title.

The opening-round loss dropped Kroening and Bellestri into the consolation bracket, where they faced seniors Devin Hutton and Isaac Olson of Thief River Falls. The Prowlersí duo won 6-3, 6-4 to end Kroening and Bellestri’s season. Hutton and Olson were then eliminated in the second round of the consolation tournament.
