Plenty of positives for Tartan girls golf

The Tartan High School girls golf team is coming back off a successful 2015 season and looking to continue to grow.

Fifth-year head coach Barb Miller’s squad returns a solid nucleus of players ready to build off last year’s championship season.

Tartan returns four letter winners and has 20 total players out for the team, which is the defending Metro East Conference co-champion.

“We are excited to compete this year and defend our title,” Miller said.

Back from last year’s conference championship team are seniors Ericca Yang, Gabby Cantony and MaKenzie Ahn, and junior Sydney Van Frost. Yang and Cantony have been on the team for five years and are expected to fill the top two spots in the lineup. Yang was named All-Conference in 2015.

New to the varsity lineup this year are sophomore Autumn Her and freshman Katrina Yang. Katrina Yang is the third Yang sibling to join the Titans girls golf team.

“Our team’s strength lies within our desire to improve and learn a better game of golf,” Miller said. “We work the longest and hardest on our short game. Chipping and putting is where a team can win or lose a match, and I remind my team of this every time we play.”

Miller routinely has new players with no golf experience whatsoever.

“This is a challenge but over the past years my numbers have gone up and each year as these girls return, they have improved by leaps and bounds,” Miller said. “My biggest hurdle is not that my girls are new to the game but that not one player is a member of a golf course.

“These girls come out excited to learn a how to play golf and hopefully with encouragement and help from myself and my assistant coach, Amy Mousel, they walk away with a feeling of true accomplishment.”

Miller expects Mahtomedi and Hastings to present the toughest challenges in the Metro East Conference this season.

“I have a good feeling about Tartan’s team this spring,” said Miller. “I see Tartan finishing in the top three of our conference. Overall, the girls golf program at Tartan is strong and growing, and I am so excited each year to see how many new players want to try out for the team.”

The Titans were scheduled to open the season April 11 against Mahtomedi but that match was postponed because of unseasonably cold, windy weather.

Tartan has three events on the schedule this week, including a conference match at Inverwood Golf Course on April 20 and the rescheduled Mahtomedi match at Dellwood on April 21.
