RAHS girls hockey season comes to a close

For the first time in more than 10 years, the Roseville Area High School girls hockey team saw its season come to an end after only one post-season game. When the Raiders fell in the Section 4AA quarterfinals on Feb. 5, it was their first one-and-done trip to the playoffs since 2004.

Roseville, the fourth seed, dropped a 4-1 decision to fifth-seeded Stillwater, a team the Raiders beat twice in the regular season.

The previous team to take Roseville out in the first round of the section playoffs was Henry Sibley, which edged the Raiders 1-0 in the Section 2AA quarterfinals 12 years ago.

Against Stillwater, Roseville kept the game close despite being outshot 26-14 in the first two periods. The Ponies tallied the only goal of the first period but Roseville responded in the second on Allyson Reilly’s goal. The assists went to Kathryn Larson and Maddison Gaffney.

The game stayed tied until the 7:09 mark when Stillwater’s Olivia Arkell tallied the game-winning goal. Stillwater added a pair of empty-net goals in the final minute of the third to seal the victory.

Roseville goalie Corrina Pierson closed out her prep hockey career with 31 saves in the loss.

The Raiders finished the season with a record of 12-14.

Stillwater went on to lose 8-1 to top-seeded Hill-Murray in the semifinals.

The section championship came down to the Pioneers and third-seeded Mounds View, another team Roseville beat during the regular season. The Mustangs battled two-time defending state champion Hill-Murray but couldn’t generate enough offense. Hill-Murray won 3-1 to advance to the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
