St. Anthony junior headed to Nordic state meet

It didn’t take long for Xavier Mansfield to acclimate to a new team. The junior from St. Anthony Village High School recently joined the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony co-op Nordic ski team and in a few short weeks won a conference and section title for the Panthers.

By virtue of a peculiar Minnesota State High School League rule, Mansfield became a Panther late in January even though he had been attending St. Anthony for a year. The rule allowed Mansfield to continue to compete for his old school, Minneapolis Patrick Henry, for one year following the transfer.

That one year period was up on Jan. 20. Since then, Mansfield has won the Northwest Suburban Conference and Section 5 individual championships. The victory in sections clinched a berth in this week’s state meet.

Mansfield won the section meet, held Feb. 3 at Wirth Park in Minneapolis, with a pursuit time of 30 minutes, 41.8 seconds. That time was more than a full minute faster than that of runner-up Thomas Woolhouse of Mora. Woolhouse finished with a total time of 32 minutes, 0.07 seconds.

St. Anthony picked up a second state entry by virtue of freshman Joe Lynch’s pursuit time of 34 minutes, 1.1 seconds at sections. Lynch finished 11th overall and fifth among the individuals who were not part of the top two teams. The top six individuals not from the top two teams advance to state.

As a team, SLP/SAV finished fourth with 353 points. Mora claimed the section team title with 379 points and Champlin Park also qualified for state by finishing second (with 369 points). Elk River, which had 357 points, finished third.

On the girls’ side, SLP/SAV landed in 11th place in the team standings. Andover won the section team title and Champlin Park was second.

Among the Panthers’ section competitors were St. Anthony seniors Claire Bedore and Elena Forsline. Bedore finished 58th overall and Forsline was 59th.
