Inquiring minds: What has ice cream got to do with soccer?

Each week the staff at the Roseville Library answers more than 2,500 questions on every subject under the sun. Here are some of the most interesting ones they’ve gotten lately.

Q. What is the Schwan’s USA Cup?

A. Each year the National Sports Center in Blaine hosts Schwan’s USA Cup for youth soccer teams. It’s the largest annual event held at the Center. This year’s tournament attracted 1,153 teams from 19 states and 17 countries. In addition to providing a lot of fun for the participants, the tournament attracts millions of dollars of out-of-state revenue. The Schwan in the name of the event stands for the Minnesota food company, which has underwritten the program since the late 1990s.
You can find out more about the competition in an online report produced by the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission. Go to www.mnsports.org/pdf/MASC_Overview_Report.pdf.
