South St. Paul upends Tartan in high-scoring game

The Tartan Titans ventured into South St. Paul for a Metro East Red Division football contest and ended up on the short end of a wild, 46-30 game Friday, Sept. 25.

Of the 76 total points, the Packers outscored the Titans by 16 points.

The Titans scored first when quarterback Marco Hernandez hit Jordan Thompson for a 38-yard TD. A second pass for a two-point conversion fell to the ground and the Titans owned a 6-0 advantage.

The Packers responded in the first quarter when Malik Holmes ran the ball in from 3 yards out. The boot by sophomore kicker Sam Rohrer was good to give the Packers a 7-6 edge.

Still in the first quarter Tartan wide receiver Chase Fleischauer pulled down a 33-yard aerial and ran it in for a TD. Ben Engwer then connected on a pass to Lucas Miske for a two-point conversion and Tartan went up 14-7.

Still in the first quarter the Packers finished a drive when quarterback Dan Pietruszewski went 8 yards for a score. Rohrer booted the PAT and the score was knotted at 14-14 as the first quarter came to a close.

The second quarter belonged to the Packers as they scored 12 points and took the lead for good. Holmes broke free for a 32-yard scamper to give South St. Paul a 20-14 margin. The PAT failed.

Next it was Pietruszewski on a 2-yard quarterback keeper and when  a 2-point run was stopped the Packers had a 26-14 leeway at the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter South St. Paul continued its parade into the Tartan end zone when Pietruszewski scored from 5 yards out. Rohrer put the PAT through the uprights and South St. Paul moved to a 33-14 advantage.

The Titans next saw Fleischauer pull down a 12-yard pass from Hernandez for a TD. Fleischauer then caught a 3-yard aerial for a two-point conversion and Tartan trailed 22-32.

The final South St. Paul TD came when Pietruszewski broke free on a 54-yard romp into pay dirt. Rohrer again made good on the PAT and South St. Paul had its 46 points.

The Titans put the last points on the board when Engwer pulled down a 6-yard pass from Hernandez and Miske then scored the two-point conversion on a pass from Hernandez.

Next up, South St. Paul will be on the road at Hill-Murray in Maplewood on Friday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
