Panthers girls soccer ready for year two in NWSC

While the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village girls soccer team finished below .500 in its first year in the Northwest Suburban Conference last year, the Panthers competed well and are eager to build on that this fall. Mindy Daugherty was an assistant coach for the Panthers last year and moves up to head coach this season.

With eight returning starters among 13 returning letterwinners, the Panthers have plenty of experience battling among the Northwest Suburban Conference elite.

"We are in a big, strong conference but were able to play with teams last year," Daugherty said. "So we are looking forward to just keep improving this year."

SLP/SAV went 5-8 in conference matches last year with victories over Coon Rapids, Champlin Park, Osseo, Irondale and Anoka. Among the conference losses was a 1-0, overtime defeat at the hands of Centennial, which made it to the state tournament last season.

So far this season, the Panthers are 1-0 in conference play following a 4-0 win over Elk River on Sept. 3. SLP/SAV also faced off against Osseo last week but the game, which was tied 1-1, was suspended because of severe weather. A make-up date had not been announced as of press time for this edition of the Bulletin.

The Panthers opened the season on Aug. 27 with a 3-1 loss to Roseville.

Another high point from 2014 that the Panthers hope to make a trend was a playoff victory for the first time since 2007. SLP/SAV wound up as the No. 4 seed last year and defeated fifth-seeded Champlin Park 5-1 in the Section 5AA quarterfinals.

"I am excited to be the leader of the team this year," said Daugherty.

This is Daugherty's 11th year of coaching high school soccer and first as a head coach. She also coaches club soccer and has assisted at the University of St. Catherine's in St. Paul. She played youth soccer in White Bear Lake, collegiately at St. Catherine's and internationally for team USA.

The Panthers return to action with three matches this week, starting Tuesday at Anoka. They also play Thursday at Andover and Saturday at Centennial.
