Polars looking to repeat as MEC champions

The North High Polars are beginning the boys soccer season on a high note. They have won the conference championship five straight years and have aspirations of making it six straight in 2015.

A year ago North finished the Metro East Conference season 7-2-1 and overall was 8-7-3. In his nine-year career at North, coach Casey Holm has a record of 89-47-11.

Holm said, "We are blessed to have a lot of experience from last year returning to play again this season.

“We are excited and hope to have a very strong season. We feel fortunate to be a part of the Minnesota State High School League.”

In 2013 Holm and his staff led the Polars to the Minnesota State Class AA championship title.

Leading North into battle this coming season will be captains Malachy Zamacona, a senior, and Gladimyr Jeudi, a sophomore. Zamacona is an All-Conference goalkeeper and Jeudi is a midfielder.

Behind the captains and bolstering the North hopes will be Brian Solis, a senior forward. All-Conference performers a year ago are juniors Aldo Norguren (D), Irvin Barrera-Gonzalez (D), Xyong Seng Thao (M), Tyvan Vang (MF) and Robert Anigbogu.

Sophomores named All-Conference honorable mention were Kelove Solon (F) and Ataniel Claremont (F).

Holm cited St. Thomas Academy and Simley as being the most likely contenders.

In play for the Section 4AA championship and a berth in the 2015 Class AA state tournament, Holm pointed to East Ridge and Park of Cottage Grove as contenders North will have to overcome to advance.

North will open the season with home games against Chanhassen at 11 a.m. Aug. 29, and East Ridge at 7 p.m. Sept. 1.

The remaining 2015 North boys soccer games are: 5 p.m. Sept. 3 at Cretin-Derham Hall; 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Hill-Murray; 7 p.m. Sept. 12 Woodbury at North; 5 p.m. Sept. 15 at Hastings; 7 p.m. Sept. 17 Henry Sibley at North; 7 p.m. Sept. 19 Blaine at North; 5 p.m. Sept. 22 Mahtomedi at North; 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Simley; 7 p.m. Sept. 28 Hudson at North; 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at South St. Paul; 7 p.m. Oct. 3 Stillwater at North; 7 p.m. Oct. 6 St. Thomas Academy at North; and 3 p.m. Oct. 8 at Minneapolis South.
