North looking to improve on tennis courts with strong senior leadership

The North High girls tennis season is underway, and the Polars are looking to improve on last year's record of 3-5.

Head coach Dan Stumpf stated, "We have some senior students who have stepped up to leadership positions this season.

"In addition we have some young players who are coming along to establish themselves at varsity positions.

"If there is a problem area for us it will be at a lack of depth in our doubles play. We are looking for improvement in that area as well."

Assisting Stumpf will be Sam Ly and Carmen Foley.

Leading the Polars will be senior captains Taylor Thiets, Elizabeth Ly and Bobbie Morelli.

The tri-captains all are singles shot-makers. Thiets will play at first singles; Ly at second singles and Morelli is a third-singles player.

Also hoping to add some consistency to the program will be seniors Sarah Warner, Jessie Farah, Charlotte Zangs and Jenny Ulven.

Behind the seniors will be junior Courtney Cole. Sophomores hoping to make an impact include Allison Le and Lucy Smith. Others hoping to break into the varsity lineup will be eighth-graders Sami Bonn and Jasmine Ulven.

As Stumpf glanced at the Metro East Conference, he cited perennial power Mahtomedi as most likely team to end up on top of the standings.

The Polars are already at 1-1 in non-conference play having played White Bear Lake and New Life Academy.

The remaining 2015 North girls tennis schedule is: Sept. 10 at Simley; Sept. 15 at Mahtomedi; Sept. 17 Hastings at North; Sept. 22 at Tartan; Sept. 24 Hill-Murray at North; and Sept. 29 Henry Sibley at North.

Matches begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Section 4 Class 3A team play will begin at the team with highest seed on  Oct. 6, and the individual playoffs begin Oct. 14 at the Baseline Tennis complex.
