Mounds View High School wins Personal Finance Decathlon state championship

Mounds View High School won the Minnesota State Personal Finance Decathlon championship on April 28 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. A second team from the school also took third place. Mounds View last won the state championship in 2013.

Mounds View students Alex Jiang, Alex Li, Emily Ruan and Daniel Yong won the championship, while students Anders Bandt, Joseph Floeder, Sam Rush and David Zheng placed third. The teams were coached by Mounds View High School social studies teacher Martha Rush.

Mounds View also swept the individual awards for individual scores. Emily Ruan, Alex Li, Sam Rush, and Daniel Yong placed first, second, third, and fourth respectively.

66 teams from across Minnesota competed online for the opportunity to be invited to the state championships.  

As state champions, the winning team will travel to Kansas City, Missouri, to compete in the national competition on May 22.

The Personal Finance Decathlon is designed to test student knowledge of personal finance in the areas of earning income, paying taxes, budgeting, saving, financial planning, investing, borrowing, banking and financial institutions, insuring, and thinking economically.
