Mustangs boys golf is young but capable

Last year's Mounds View High School boys golf team was young and the expectations weren't very high. That turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy as the Mustangs struggled.

Fast forward a year and the roster is still dotted with plenty of players who aren't old enough to drive, but the outlook for the team is improved.

"I think we could surprise some teams," said Mounds View head coach Joe Voeller.

Mounds View has three players who have shown a tremendous upside and they make up half of a list of golfers who Voeller said are capable of shooting in the 70s on a consistent basis.

Leading the way is eighth grader Matthew Garside, who was the team's No. 1 golfer a year ago as a seventh grader. Garside fired a 73 on the first day of the section tournament and that was good enough to qualify him for day two.

At barely five feet tall and almost 90 pounds, Garside isn't booming huge drives, but he has great course management for a player his age.

"His golf brain is way beyond what you see from older kids," said Voeller.

Freshman Vann Hartigan is only a year older than Garside, but is about twice his size. Hartigan had a great summer in 2014 and is regularly in the 70s.

Sophomore Connor Isaacson rounds out Mounds View's top three. His best rounds come at North Oaks Country Club, where is usually in the ’70s.

"He has tremendous promise," Voeller noted.

With another year of experience, Voeller has pegged his team as a top half of the conference squad. As for sections, he would like to see the entire team advance to day two.

Mounds View has already played five events this season. The only action on this week's schedule was a Suburban East Conference match at Stillwater Country Club on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

The Mustangs play in events on three straight days next week, starting April 27 at an invitational at Dellwood Hills. The next day they're at Stone Ridge and then they play a conference match at Highland National.

Heading into the season, Voeller tabbed Stillwater, Forest Lake and White Bear Lake as the top three teams in the conference.
