Author, woodworker Spike Carlsen at Lake Elmo Library

Stillwater resident Spike Carlsen will introduce “Cabin Lessons,” his latest book to be released on April 21, and share building projects from his last book “The Backyard Homestead Book of Building Projects” at the Lake Elmo Public Library on Thursday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. As he describes the two books he will also be building a simple Leopold bench that will be given away at the end of the evening to one lucky program recipient.
“The Backyard Homestead Book of Building Projects” has 76 DIY projects for practical outdoor items designed to help anyone live more sustainably and independently. Carlsen offers clear, simple, fully illustrated instructions for everything from the bench he will be building to plant supports and a clothesline to a potting bench, a chicken coop, a hoop greenhouse, a cold frame, a beehive, a root cellar with storage bins, and an outdoor shower. Most of the projects are suitable for complete novices, and all use just basic tools and standard materials.
The library is located at 3537 Lake Elmo Avenue, Lake Elmo. Books will be available for signing and purchase. For more information see lakeelmopubliclibrary.org. Registration for this program is strongly advised and can be made in person or call 651-773-4926.
