Road construction season nears in Ramsey County

Make no mistake, regardless of any more impending spring snowstorms, road construction season is nearly here.

To ring in the changing seasons, Ramsey County announced its 2015 road construction plans following their approval at the Ramsey County Board’s March 24 meeting.

The county will take the lead on or participate in 34 projects beginning this spring and summer, with 12 of those projects happening in the Review and Bulletin areas.

Projects range from bridge reconstructions and road resurfacing to replacing under-road drainage pipes. More than a few area projects are being undertaken with aims of increasing access to the Rice Creek Commons—formerly known as TCAAP—redevelopment in Arden Hills.

Perhaps the most substantial project of the bunch, the replacement of the Highway 96 bridge and interchange at Interstate 35W, will increase the bridge’s capacity and change the traditional traffic flow to a diverging diamond interchange.

One metro area example of a DDI is south of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Terminal 2 at Interstate 494 and 34th Avenue South.

Work on replacing the Highway 96 bridge over I-35W in Arden Hills and New Brighton is planned to begin in May and run through November.

Another relatively novel traffic control feature, a roundabout, is planned for the intersection of County Road I, Rice Creek Parkway and Old Highway 8, just east of I-35W in Shoreview. Work there is planned to begin in August and be completed in December.

Cleveland Avenue between Larpenteur Avenue and County Road B in Falcon Heights and Roseville will be resurfaced over the summer, and Victoria Street Between County Road B and County Road B2 will also be resurfaced this summer. Both projects are expected to last 10 days.

The remaining eight projects are listed below:

• The County Road E bridge over Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills will be replaced this summer and will result in weekend closure of Snelling while the bridge is removed.

• County Road E between Snelling Avenue and Lexington Avenue in Arden Hills will be re-striped and have new traffic signals installed beginning in May.

• County Road I between Lexington Avenue and Hodgson Road in Shoreview will be resurfaced this summer. The project is expected to take 10 days.

• A drainage pipe running under Edgerton Street near Sunset Court in Little Canada will be replaced this summer. The project is expected to take four weeks.

• Lexington Avenue between Cummings Park Drive and Interstate 694 in Arden Hills and Shoreview will be rebuilt beginning in June. The project is expected to take a year. Lanes will be added along with additional traffic signals, as well as a multi-use trail along the reconstructed stretch.

• Lexington Avenue between Highway 96 and County Road I in Arden Hills and Shoreview will be resurfaced this summer. The project is expected to take 10 days.

• A drainage pipe running under Snelling Avenue near County Road E in Arden Hills will be replaced in late summer. The project is expected to take four weeks.

• St. Croix Street, the linkage between Highway 280 and Terminal Road in Roseville will be resurfaced this summer. The project is expected to take 10 days.
