Irondale senior has busy state meet waiting

Jacob Wielinski has been to the state swimming and diving meet before, but this year will be his busiest trip yet. The Irondale High School senior qualified for state in three events.

Wielinski captured a pair of titles at the Section 5AA meet last weekend. He won the 500-yard freestyle by obliterating the field and set a record in the process. His time of 4:38.09 was faster than the runner-up by more than 18 seconds, and he beat the previous meet record by nearly 2-1/2 seconds.

Wielinski also helped Irondale's 400-yard freestyle relay team nab a section title. He swam the anchor leg as the foursome won the event with a time of 3:22.87.

Junior Ed Olivares Raniolo swam the first leg and was ahead after 50 yards, but was third after 100. Senior Jack Marchiafava pulled the team into second place after his leg and sophomore Greg Pehl kept the team in second leading up to Wielinski's turn.

Wielinski recorded the fastest 50-yard and 100-yard times of the event as the Knights ended up winning by more than two seconds.

Wielinski's third event at state will be the 200-yard individual medley. He qualified by placing second at the section meet with a time of 1:59.02.
