Loss to Stillwater drops Mustangs swim and dive to 0-2

The Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team hosted Stillwater on Jan. 8 for its first home meet of the season and fell to the Ponies by a score of 100-73. The Mustangs didn't provide much of a challenge to the deep and talented visitors who won 11 of 12 events on the evening program. The lone winner for the Mustangs was freshman Quinn Doan who had a very nice swim to win the 100-yard breaststroke.

The visitors jumped out to a 12-2 lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The Mustang quartet of senior co-captains Hayden Oliver and Seth Cline, along with sophomore Sam Kwong and Doan took third place in 1:50.30.

The Ponies swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, with Mounds View sophomore Albert Pan claiming fourth in 1:57.47 and senior co-captain Peter Goggin taking fifth in 2:03.45.

Seventh-grader Isaac Pan was the top finisher for the Mustangs in the 200-yard individual medley with a fourth-place swim of 2:21.59. Senior Josiah Vranyes was fifth with 2:22.90.

The Mustangs have no divers this year, so the Ponies' sweep on the boards extended their lead to 61-14. Doan had a strong swim of 59.80 in the 100-yard butterfly, but it was only good enough for fourth place. Goggin claimed fifth place in 1:01.77. At this point, Stillwater led by a score of 100-23 and swam the remainder of the program as "exhibition," with points earned not counting towards the final score.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Mounds View quartet of Kwong, Doan, Goggin and Albert Pan took third place with a 1:40.88 clocking.
