King and I Thai coming to Mendota Heights

Two years after King and I Thai shuttered its Minneapolis location, the restaurant is planning to reemerge — in Mendota Heights.

Paster Properties, a developer and manager of neighborhood shopping centers in Minnesota, announced Dec. 18 that King and I Thai will be coming soon to Mendota Plaza on Hwy. 110, just off of Dodd Road, in Mendota Heights.

King and I Thai first opened in downtown Minneapolis 37 years ago, and closed in December of 2012.

The response online to its return has ranged from: "The drive will be worth it! CANNOT WAIT FOR THE GRAND RE-OPENING!" to  "In the suburbs...BOO!"

But those unafraid of leaving downtown Minneapolis were quick to retort: "Mendota Heights isn't the boonies... It's a quick drive to/from MPLS. Obviously some people posting weren't THAT devoted."

The Mendota Plaza location is around 15 miles southeast of King and I's former downtown digs, depending on the route.

On Facebook, the owners of King and I Thai tried to reassure their avid followers: "I'm sorry for all the mystery and few answers. We would like to assure you that yes we are in the process of reopening at a new location.

"We will be providing more details in the following weeks. Thank you to everyone and the awesome excitement!! We look forward to fulfilling your craving with chef Pu's amazing dishes."

King and I Thai is expected to offer take-out, delivery and dine-in options at the former BC2 Artisan Bakery & Bistro location.

"The owners plan to open the restaurant doors in a few months, after renovations have been made to the 3,046-square-foot space," according to the Paster announcement.
