Celebrate four days of fun at Huff n’ Puff Days
The annual Lake Elmo Jaycees Huff n’ Puff Days are back next week for a 38th consecutive run Thursday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 10.
Lions Park will once again be home to this four-day event that has been a favorite summertime tradition for many in the Lake Elmo area since its inception, and it’s all for a great cause.
The Lake Elmo Jaycees is a leadership development organization for adults ages 18-40, who live or work in and around the St. Croix Valley region. Huff n’ Puff Days is the civic organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. Proceeds from the event help support several community and youth projects in the area.
Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday with the start of the 96-team softball tournament -- 64 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams. Participants come from communities across the metro area to play in the tourney. The majority of games are played at the field in Lions Park, located at 3535 Laverne Ave. N. Games will continue on Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Band competition, kids’ activiites
If softball doesn’t pique your interest, there are many other activities for all ages scheduled over the four-day festival.
The city’s communications coordinator Alyssa MacLeod says the Jaycees have ramped up kids’ activities this year and have added a Children’s’ Fun Day to the roster on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the playground area in Lions Park.
Vendors will be visiting the park and bringing with them old-fashioned kids carnival games, video games and other fun activities and prizes.
Also new to Huff n’ Puff Days this year is the 2014 St. Croix Battle of the Bands competition. Bands will take the stage on Friday, Aug. 8 from 7 to 11 p.m. in Lions Park. The band competition will feature up to eight local bands that will perform for the public and a panel of judges.
Each band will play a three-song set and will be judged on its technique, stage presence and crowd interaction, appearance and overall performance. The winning band will take home a prize package and be crowned “2014’s Best Band in the St. Croix Valley.”
A pancake breakfast fundraiser will take place from 8 a.m. until noon on both Saturday and Sunday. The breakfast will be hosted by the Lake Elmo Fire Department and will take place at Fire Station One, 3510 Laverne Ave. across from Lions Park.
A double-elimination bean bag tournament will be held at Lions Park on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The top three teams will receive prizes. Teams can register at the ticket booth in Lions Park prior to scheduled start times. There is a $20 registration fee per team.
Food, beverages and merchandise will be for sale at Lions Park on Thursday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., Friday from 5:30 p.m. until midnight, Saturday from 8 am. until midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A medallion hunt will again be returning to this year’s Huff n’ Puff event. The first clue will be posted Sunday, Aug. 3, and the hunt will continue until the medallion is found (additional clues will be published around noon each day).
Clues will be published on The Huff n’ Puff and Lake Elmo Jaycees facebook pages, and at www.lakeelmojaycees.org. The medallion (a specially decorated 2014 Huff n’ Puff button) will be hidden somewhere on Lake Elmo public land.
No purchase is necessary to participate. The individual who finds the medallion will receive $100.
There will also be free drawings for prizes by local businesses throughout the four-day event. Visit the ticket booth in Lions Park for an entry slip.
