“And The Beat Goes On”

Slice of Shoreview Days 2014

Slice of Shoreview Days 2014 is July 25 to 27 at Island Lake County Park at the intersection of Interstate 694 and Victoria Street. Entry and parking are free.

“What I absolutely love is that The Slice of Shoreview truly reflects its name; it’s a true slice of Shoreview for the whole community,” said Jacci Krebsbach, chair of the Slice of Shoreview Days Committee.

Slice festivities begin Friday, July 25 at 4 p.m. in Island Lake County Park. Many attractions run all three days of the Slice, including golf cart rides for seniors throughout the park, Art in the Park and the carnival.

This year’s Slice motto is “And The Beat Goes On,” though Krebsbach said it could have been “Back to the Animals” in light of several of 2014’s attractions.

Returning again this year, the Dock Dogs will be performing all three days while the petting zoo and pony rides by Fantasy Corral will operate throughout the weekend as well. On Sunday, July 27 there is an appearance by TPT’s Clifford the Big Red Dog as well as birds of prey from the University of Minnesota Raptor Center with a raptor meet-and-greet and show.

On Friday and Saturday the Lake Johanna Fire Department is holding its annual open house. On Saturday morning Boy Scout Troop 65 is holding its pancake breakfast at the park’s center shelter from 8 to 11 a.m., followed by the Slice of Shoreview Days Parade at 10 a.m. The parade runs north from Victoria Street and County Road D to Island Lake County Park.

Sunday morning features the Tour de Trails bike ride, which starts at 8:30 a.m. with two routes of different lengths through Shoreview’s lengthy trail system. The bike ride is family friendly and helmets are required; the price is $7 per person or $20 per family.

Also on Sunday, there is a 10 a.m. church service at Calvary Church, followed by the Car & Motorcycle show starting at noon and featuring a musical performance by The Holy Rocka Rollaz.

Both Friday and Saturday nights feature fireworks over the lake at 10 p.m., and door prizes will be awarded throughout the weekend.

Slice food organizer Steve Gallop said one thing to look out for at this year’s food court is the MeatEater, from Sweet & Savory.

Said Gallop, “The MeatEater is a cheddar brat wrapped with American cheese, a hamburger patty and two slices of bacon, all deep-fried and served on a hot dog bun.”
