39ers go 2-for-3 at River Falls tourney

The North St. Paul American Legion Post No. 39 baseball team headed to River Falls, Wis., for games June 27, 28 and 29.

The 39ers were able to gain a pair of wins before they were stopped in an eight-inning contest by the host River Falls Post No. 121.

North St. Paul 10 - Holy Angels 1

In the opening contest against a team from Holy Angels of Richfield, the 39ers banged out 11 hits and took advantage of three errors and four walks to win going away.

Zach Economy was on the mound all seven innings and was able to pitch out of several jams. He allowed just one run on five hits, had four strikeouts and gave up three walks.

Leading the North St. Paul attack was Joe Messerole, who went 3-for-4 and had a pair of RBI.

Also having multiple hits was Brendon Herold, who went 2-for-3 and also picked up a pair of RBI. Jace Piepgras was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The 39ers scored a pair of runs in the second inning with Tom Mulvaney coming home with what turned out to be the game-winner.

North St. Paul added a run in the third and in the upper fifth the 39ers put the game out of reach with seven tallies. In the deciding inning, the 39ers took advantage of four hits, two walks, two errors and a balk to gain their runs.

Holy Angels scored its lone run in the bottom of inning fourth.

North St. Paul 2 - Inver Grove Heights 1

Despite issuing 10 walks to the Inver Grove Heights Post No. 424 Grovers, the 39ers hung on to gain a hard-fought, 2-1 victory.

The North St. Paul players scored their runs in the top of the sixth when they bunched together three of the four hits they picked up in the game.

The runs came on doubles by Mulvaney and Steve Orme, a single by Piepgras and a costly error - the Grovers committed three - on a ball banged off the bat of Adam Hildebrandt.

Inver Grove Heights gained its lone run in the last of the second, but the damage by the 39ers had already been done.

River Falls 4 - North St. Paul 3

The 39ers banged out seven hits in their game with River Falls Post No. 121, but the big number on the scoreboard at game’s end was not in their favor.

In a tight game the 39ers gave up two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the third inning.

North St. Paul knotted the score with three tallies in the fifth inning. After a couple of hits by Jack Murnan and Hildebrand, Mulvaney blasted a triple to deep center field. An error on a hit to the left side by Messerole allowed Mulvaney to score.

In the last of the eighth River Falls led off with a double, followed by a sacrifice and a single into right field for the game-winning run.
