Legion Baseball: 39ers 10-run Lakers
The North St. Paul American Legion Post 39 baseball team came off a 12-inning marathon game with the Hamline Post 418 Purple Hawks for a follow up contest the next day with White Bear Lake Post 168.
In an almost vengeful type of play, the 39ers cruised an 11-0, 4 1/2-inning game that ended due to the 10-run rule.
“We hit the ball. We didn’t get all that good pitching, but we played well enough in the field to stop any threats they mounted,” stated North St. Paul manager Ron Adams. “Tonight we swung the bats and our kids came to play. We’ll take the win.”
“I don’t know what to say,” said White Bear Lake veteran manager Joe Janitschke. “We’ve got three of our best hitters sitting on the bench with injuries. We’ll get better, but right now we are struggling.”
On two occasions during the abbreviated contest, the Lakers in the second and fourth innings left the bases loaded. In inning four they loaded the sacks with no outs and didn’t score.
In both innings they had only one hit, loading the sacks with five walks. In the game the Lakers could only muster four hits and left a total of eight runners stranded.
Meanwhile the 39ers left no doubt about their batting potency. They scored four runs in the first inning on four hits.
In the third they put up two more tallies and finished it off in the bottom of the fourth when they pounded out six hits and scored five more to produce their 11-run total. In all North St. Paul had 13-hits.
Leading the slugfest was Sam Farley who went 3-for-3, with two doubles, two runs and 2-RBI.
Several others had multiple hits. Corky Hildebrandt went 2-for-3 and scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the first.
Tommy Mulvaney, Joe Messerole, Steve Orme and Dylan Foote all went 2-for-3 in the 13-hit barrage mounted by the 39ers.
Next up, the 39ers at Kuenkel Field ó will play double header games June 18, at 6 p.m., against the Hamline Hylanders and at 8:15 p.m., against the Hamline Purple Hawks. June 20-22 they will participate in the 39th Annual Grand Rapids Invitational. They return to face White Bear Lake June 24 on the road.
