Students at Regency Institute in Maplewood give back to Children’s Hospital

Students at Maplewood’s Regency Beauty institute used their education methods to give back to the community, donating $5 of each $9 haircut to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota during their May 29 and 30 event.

“So far, it’s pretty busy out there. We’ve had a few haircuts going on,” said participating student Cassandra Dudrey on Friday morning. “Seeing all the people that have been in here so far makes me excited to help out.”

This is the first ever cut-a-thon. Students, clients and instructors could also make cash donations if their hair was already at a satisfactory point. These will be used to purchase items from the hospital’s wish list, which includes “I-Spy” books, crayons, LEGO sets and more.

Guests could also contribute toys they have purchased to a donation box in the lobby at the Maplewood site.

“The campus is always looking for ways to give back, and many of the students felt that donating to the hospital would really connect with the members of the community,” said Emily Genco, spokesperson for the Regency Institute. “Many of the students have kids of their own.”

While the cut-a-thon may be a first of its kind, the Regency Institute has worked with Children’s Hospital before, but never to this capacity.

“They wanted to do something with their students to give back, and they thought Children’s would be a good place to do it,” said Kiiresten Preble, the annual giving officer for Children’s Hospital. “This is the first big thing that they’ve done [with Children’s], where they’re working with students, clients and everyone else as well.”
