Baseball: Stillwater ends Tartan baseball season

Stillwater 6 - Tartan 0

The Tartan Titans met the Stillwater Ponies in semifinal action of the Section 4AAA baseball playoffs May 29 at Municipal Stadium in St. Paul.

When the dust had settled, the Ponies were the 6-0 victors, while the Titans were packing their duffel bags and planning for next year.

On the mound for the Ponies was senior Trevor Dudar. He silenced the usually potent Tartan bats by allowing only three hits.

Following the first inning when Tommy Hanson belted a double to the center-field fence and moved to third on an error, Tartan was able to muster only two other hits - both in the second inning. For the final five innings the Titans had only one walked runner reach first base.

In all, Dudar struck out five, walked one and hit one batter. Reliever Nick Teske came on in the seventh inning and struck out the side.

“There weren’t a lot of hits by either team,” stated Stillwater head coach Mike Parker.  “Tartan is a good team. We took advantage of them in the sixth inning, but other than that, it was a good ball game.”

From the Tartan standpoint, Tartan head coach Curt Russell stated, “When you don’t hit the ball, you don’t score any runs and that pretty well sums up the game.

“But we had a good year. (Eric) Winter and (Tommy) Hanson, a couple of our seniors, had terrific seasons. They will certainly be missed. Overall, this is a good bunch of kids, and together we will have to build for next season.”

The winning run came in top of the fourth inning. Cory Albertson led off and picked a pitch he liked. He cracked the ball 341 feet out of the ball park for a home run.

Then things fell apart for the Titans in the upper half of the sixth.

The Ponies sent 10 batters to box and scored five runs on three hits. There were two walks, a ball dropped in the outfield and a pair of batters whacked by pitched balls, all of which spelled disaster for the Titans.

The Ponies (14-10) advanced in section play to face Woodbury, while the Titans finished the season with a 9-13 mark.
