Little Canada chiropractor faces rape charges

Paul D. Thompson

Just a week after a Roseville massage therapist pleaded guilty to charges of inappropriately touching female clients during appointments, Ramsey County prosecutors reported they have now filed charges against a Little Canada chiropractor for raping a client during an appointment.

Paul D. Thompson, 54, of Vadnais Heights has owned Thompson Chiropractic on Little Canada Road since 1985, according to the clinic's website.

The criminal complaint stated that a female patient whom Thompson had treated "on and off" in the past told law enforcement officers that Thompson had forced her to have sex with him during a May 8 appointment. She did not tell anyone about the incident until May 13, when she told her fiance, the complaint said.

Then, the victim's fiance went to the office to confront Thompson, and recorded their conversation on his cell phone. Her fiance told investigators Thompson had admitted to having raped the 27-year-old victim, according to the complaint.

Thompson also allegedly texted the victim on May 16, writing "I'm sorry for how I treated you."

On May 19, the victim met with investigators and told them she was initially "in shock" and afraid to report the assault because she and her family had known Thompson for 10 years, the complaint stated.

She told authorities that she and Thompson had never had a romantic relationship, and that she had been going to his clinic twice a week for the past three years for treatment of pain and injuries following a car accident.

On May 20, the victim called Thompson and recorded their conversation. During that phone call, Thompson allegedly said, "I'm sorry all this extra stuff happened," and said he knew she didn't want to have sex with him, according to the complaint.

During an interview with investigators, Thompson allegedly admitted to raping the victim, and also admitted to having touched her breasts and groin area during previous appointments, the complaint stated. The victim reportedly told investigators she did not recall those incidents.

Additionally, Thompson told investigators he had complaints filed against him with the Minnesota Board of Chiropractors for "boundary issues and inappropriate touching" and was on probation for four years, according to the complaint. During that probation period, he was supposed to have another person in the room when he was with clients, according to the complaint.

Thompson is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct, one in the third degree and another in the fifth degree. The third-degree charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine, and the fifth-degree charge has a one-year maximum sentence and/or a $3,000 fine.

According to the Thompson Chiropractic website, Thompson is married and has five children. The website states Thompson attended Lakewood College, now Century College, in White Bear Lake. He then attended Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri, which has a doctor of chiropractic program.

Court records indicate Thompson pleaded guilty to domestic assault charges in 2000.
