Ex-boyfriend arrested in stabbing death of Towanda Harris
Police officers followed a trail of blood from the living room of an apartment into the bedroom.
There they found Towanda Harris, 46, lying dead on the floor of her own bedroom in a pool of blood in an apartment on the 1400 block of Minnehaha Avenue East at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10.
As her 10-year-old niece described it, Harris’ eyes were “floating backwards.”
Willie Chestnut, 54, is charged with stabbing the woman. He faces a second-degree murder charge.
According to the complaint:
The two were romantically involved in 2003.
Harris’ husband told police Chestnut stabbed her after an argument about their past escalated.
They were hanging out at Harris’ apartment with Harris’ husband and 10-year-old niece, and Chestnut’s 5-year-old son and his girlfriend.
Harris and Chestnut had been drinking vodka and beer, when they began arguing, first verbally, and then started hitting each other.
Chestnut at one point knocked Harris to the floor. After that they both reportedly got knives from the kitchen.
“No Willie, no, don’t stab me!” the 10-year-old girl heard her aunt say.
The two were poking toward each other with knives, until Chestnut stabbed Harris in the shoulder.
She ran into the bedroom and locked the door.
In the meantime, Chestnut left the scene, still holding a knife, which he left outside the apartment building, the complaint said.
“I stabbed that bitch,” Chestnut’s girlfriend reportedly heard him say.
Police caught up with Harris, his 5-year-old son, and his girlfriend at a bus stop a few blocks from the apartment.
Once in custody, he initially denied being at Harris’ apartment, but eventually admitted that he was there, police said. He also reportedly denied stabbing her, saying “I wouldn’t do that; I love her.”
Police informed him that Harris was dead, and that he was being arrested for murder, to which he reportedly said his “life is gone.”
