Skated my way here
What did they teach me in J-school? Never become a part of the story.
But now, I’m here, tasked with an introductory column about me, Mike, the new reporter for the Bulletin and Roseville Review, and the rule is broken so I’d might as well keep going.
I was born in Montana and grew up briefly in Arizona, before leaving the west and settling in Hopkins as a fourth grader, where I would finish out my public school education, eventually at Hopkins High School.
I’ve skateboarded since junior high, and through skateboarding I got my first taste of journalism; I helped to produce a handful of local skateboard videos, kept a blog about Twin Cities skateboarding, and eventually started writing for a national skateboard magazine, and even ESPN.com.
With that bit of writing success, I landed at the University of Minnesota, in pursuit of a journalism degree. In school, I wrote a weekly column for the Minnesota Daily and interned at the Southwest Journal and The Journal in Minneapolis.
Following graduation, I freelanced for The Journal covering Northeast Minneapolis and wrote about skateboarding for Red Bull.
Now, for a couple of weeks or so, I’ve been covering Arden Hills, Mounds View, New Brighton and St. Anthony for the Bulletin and writing for the Roseville Review, as well.
That’s enough about me, what’s going on with you?
