Softball: Polars dominate Titans, 5-0
Schanks has 10 strikeouts in 2-hit shutout
North 5 - Tartan 0
It took four innings for the North High softball players to get unwound, but when they did the put five runs on the board and downed the Tartan Titans by a 5-0 count on Monday, April 21.
Leading the North in battle was senior pitcher Haley Schanks. She allowed the visiting Titans just two hits while striking out 10. At the plate she went 2-for-3 - both singles - and running bases for her was Georgie Robasse, who scored two runs.
“Mostly, my rise ball was working for me,” stated Schanks following the game. “I was able to get ahead on the count and that was important. Then I was able to hit the target, and my location was good today.”
The Polars have pushed their season mark to 3-0 and head coach Cliff Charpentier agreed, “We hit the ball well. I don’t know why, but it seems like we have waited in all three games until late to begin putting runs on the board.
“We haven’t had a run scored against us in all three games. Our pitching has held up in the games until we have been able to score. (Tartan) played well. It was a good game”
From the Tartan point of view, head coach Brian Larson smiled and said, “You can chalk this one up to some coaching mistakes. That, and our inexperience showed in places.”
The Titans have just one senior on their roster.
“I thought our pitcher (senior Keedy Tonn) threw well enough. She had a good game. There were a couple of plays we should have made, but then there were a couple of mental errors. All in all It was a good game for us. North has been blowing teams out and that didn’t happen today.”
The game moved on with neither team putting a runner past first base until Schanks led off the bottom of the fourth with a single into left centerfield. Robasse went in to run.
Erin Jungmann followed with a sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error and Madison DelCastillo was a pinch runner.
Julia Tanzer sacrificed the pair to third and second. A bunt by Carli Langevin followed and she was safe on the sacrifice and went to second on the play at the plate. She made an attempt to move to third. On the throw back to second, DelCastillo also came home and North was on top 2-0.
In the last of the fifth Lily Langevin cracked a hard shot into left. Katelyn Stepaniak then knocked single to left field. Schanks looped a wind-blown ball into right field to load the bases and Robasse went in to run. Jungman then banged a high pop up between the catcher, pitcher and third base. An infield fly was called, but the ball fell between the three and bounded into foul territory. When the ball hit the ground, Robasse came home and the other runners moved up. A walk later and Carli Langevin banged a two-RBI shot to left field to push the score to the final 5-0.
Gaining the two Tartan hits were Kristina Lodahl and Kailee Stiff.
The North line score read 5-8-0-6.
