Mustangs baseball sees rollercoaster start

The defending state champion Mustangs have had an up-and-down start to the season.

Mounds View began this week with a record of 3-5 and was looking to build on the 1-0 victory over Park-Cottage Grove it picked up on Friday.

Charlie Callahan had a big hand in the Park victory by throwing a no-hitter. He struck out five, walked only one and faced just one batter over the minimum. At the plate, Callahan went 2-for-3 and his double in the fifth inning drove in the only run of the game.

Joe Fredrickson also had a nice day at the plate with three hits and he scored the game-winning run. Wyatt Meyer had Mounds View’s other hit and leads the team in hitting with a .429 average.

While its record might not be that stellar, Mounds View has proven itself a tough beat. All three of the Mustangs’ losses in conference games have been by one run and its non-conference loss, to a Park Center team that was undefeated at the time, was a two-run affair.

In addition to the Park win, Mounds View also owns victories over Stillwater and Forest Lake.

Mounds View plays four games this week, including back-to-back contests against White Bear Lake on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Mustangs close out the week with a trip to Stillwater on Friday.
