Boys golf: Tartan looking for numbers and help from newcomers

Tartan High School coach Don Lee is ruing what the 2013 graduation did to a very successful boys golf program.

He pointed out that several outstanding players with varsity experience graduated last year.

In an assessment of what he might expect this season, Lee said, “This will be a weak year for us. The past couple of years or so, we have been lucky to have some strong talent.

“There is not much to report this season. We don’t have many kids with any varsity experience. The last few years were great! This year we will be rebuilding.”

Lee said he will be assisted this season by Tartan grad Matt Monson, who is now doing his student teaching at his alma mater.

Seniors Deion Kelly and Matt Wales are the captains and will be anchoring the Titans.

Around the Classic Suburban Conference, Lee looked at possible top teams and mentioned Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi and Simley, adding somewhat jokingly, “What else is new?”

The Titans were scheduled to open the season April 15 at 2:45 p.m. in a triangular match with Hill-Murray and St. Thomas Academy at the Mendakota Country Club.

With the uncertainty of the weather this spring, some contests may have to be cancelled. Rescheduled matches may be found by going to:  classicsuburban.org.
