Around 1 a.m. Monday, March 10, police found a man lying dead in an apartment building on the 700 block of East Third Street in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood.

Police identified the deceased man as Joseph Michael Saros, 43, of St. Paul.

The medical examiner reported he died from blunt traumatic injuries from being kicked in the head.

According to a complaint from the Ramsey County attorney’s office, Peter Louis John, 50, is charged with second-degree murder for unintentionally killing Saros. The two men appear to have known each other, police said.

According to the complaint, John had been drinking at the apartment for hours, along with a couple other men.

Neither John nor Saros lived at the apartment.

One witness told police that Saros later showed up at the apartment and “started talking shit and wouldn’t shut up.”

John and another man began to beat him up, kicking him repeatedly in the head, the witness reportedly told police. The witness described the kicking as “winding up like a football punter.”

The witness told police he didn’t think John or the other man had intended to kill Saros.

The witness said he fell asleep after the assault, and awoke a few hours later to use the bathroom. He saw Saros’ dead body lying on the floor, with blood everywhere, and called police.

When officers arrived, they found Saros’ body, as well as John and one other man. Another man who allegedly assaulted Saros was nowhere to be found.

Police are still looking for him. According to the complaint, a witness described him as an older man, age 50 to 55, with longer gray hair, wearing “army stuff.”
