Concordia Academy through to semifinals

By getting a bye in the first round of the section playoffs, the Concordia Academy girls basketball team had seven days between its final regular season game and first playoff contest. The extra time off didn’t affect the Beacons as they rolled to an easy victory on Saturday.

Concordia, the No. 2 seed in Section 4AA, put the clamps on seventh-seeded St. Paul Academy in a 59-16 victory. The Beacons held SPA to 10 first-half points and was even tougher in the second half when the Spartans scored only six points.

Only four Spartans scored in the game and none had more than six points.

While its defense was the story, Concordia Academy also got its offense going as three players reached double figures. Michala Walther and Anika Neuman led the Beacons with 13 points each while Megan Fallert added 11.

With the victory, Concordia advances to the section semifinals on Tuesday, when it hosts third-seeded Minnehaha Academy at 7 p.m. The Redhawks also received a first-round bye before opening the post-season with a 53-34 victory over sixth-seeded Columbia Heights on Saturday.

Concordia (22-5) and Minnehaha (18-6) are both members of the Tri-Metro Conference so they face each other at least once during the regular season. This year, the Beacons won that match-up 51-42 on Feb. 4 on their home court.

The other Section 4AA semifinal on Tuesday features fourth-seeded New Life Academy (17-10) visiting top-seeded St. Croix Lutheran (23-3). New Life beat Community of Peace Academy and St. Agnes to reach the semifinals while St. Croix topped St. Paul Humboldt in its lone playoff game thus far.

Concordia enters Tuesday’s game having won 12 of its past 13 games.

The two semifinal winners will meet for the section championship and a berth in next week’s state tournament on Friday at 8:15 p.m. at Macalester College in St. Paul.
