Mounds View seniors lead state swim contingent
The Mounds View High School boys swimming and diving team earned seven entries in this week’s state meet and Alec Martini and Sasha Safonov had hands in more than half.
Martini and Safonov, both seniors, qualified for state in four events each at Saturday’s Section 5AA meet at Minnetonka East Middle School. Both will swim two solo events and two relays.
Martini’s solo events are the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. He finished fourth in both at sections but had times faster than the qualifying standard. He went 53.26 seconds in the butterfly and 54.89 in the backstroke.
Safonov will swim solo in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle. He took second in the freestyle with a time of 48.37 seconds and beat the standard in the breaststroke while finishing seventh with a time of 1:02.28.
As for the relays, Martini and Safonov teamed up with fellow seniors Andrew Wang and Ben Kaiser to place second and beat the standard in the 200-yard medley relay. Their time was 1:38.87.
Martini, Safonov, Kaiser and junior Tanner Sachse combined to finish third in the 400-yard freestyle relay but their time of 3:16.82 beat the qualifying standard.
Wang is also a multi-event qualifier. He finished sixth in the breaststroke but beat the qualifying standard with a time of 1:01.96.
As a team, Mounds View finished third in the standings at the section meet. The Mustangs amassed 304 points, leaving them behind only section champion Wayzata (542 points) and Maple Grove (383.5).
Junior Jacob Wielinski is headed to the state meet following a pair of successful swims at the Section 5AA meet last weekend.
Wielinski won a section title in one event and took second place in another to gain a pair of state entries.
Wielinski’s section title came in the 500-yard freestyle, which he won with a time of 4:43.08. He won the event by more than two and a half seconds.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Wielinski finished second to Wayzata senior Kevin Stowe by about a third of a second.
The state meet is Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. each night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Thursday is the diving preliminaries, the swimming prelims take place on Friday and the finals for all events are on Saturday.
